Solar Battery Storage Glasgow

Glasgow Solar Panel Installers fits solar battery storage systems to homes across Glasgow and the surrounding areas, helping you get far more value from the electricity your panels generate. Most of the solar energy produced during the day goes unused if you're out at work. A battery changes that completely, storing what your panels produce so it's ready for you when you actually need it.

A home battery sits alongside your solar panel system and fills up automatically throughout the day. Come evening, instead of drawing from the grid, your home runs off the stored electricity. It's a straightforward piece of kit that makes a real difference to how much you rely on your energy supplier.

How does a solar battery actually work?

Your solar panels generate DC electricity, which an inverter converts to AC for use in your home. Any electricity your household isn't using at that moment flows into the battery rather than out to the grid. Once the battery is full, surplus power is exported, but your stored energy stays in the system ready for the evening.

Most battery systems connect to a smartphone app, so you can see exactly how much energy is stored, how much your panels are generating, and how much your home is drawing at any given time. It gives you a clear picture of your energy use in a way that's actually useful day to day.

How much can I save with battery storage?

A typical solar household without a battery uses somewhere around 30% of the electricity their panels generate. Adding battery storage can push that figure up to around 80%, which is a significant difference when it comes to your bills. The more of your own electricity you use, the less you're buying from your supplier at standard tariff rates.

Some households also benefit from off-peak charging, where the battery draws cheap overnight electricity from the grid on tariffs like Octopus Go or Economy 7. That stored cheap electricity can then cover your morning usage before the panels kick in. Over a year, the combined effect on your energy bills can be substantial.

What battery capacity do I need?

Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours, and the right size depends on your household's evening and overnight consumption. A smaller home might manage well with a 5kWh battery, while a larger household or one with an electric vehicle could benefit from 10kWh or more. Some systems are modular, meaning you can start with one battery and add a second later if your needs change.

When we visit your property to provide a quote, we'll look at your current electricity bills and usage patterns to recommend a battery size that actually fits how your household lives. There's no point in oversizing and paying more than you need to.

What happens during a power cut?

This is something a lot of people ask about. Standard solar and battery setups are required by law to shut down during a grid outage, which is a safety requirement to protect engineers working on the lines. However, some battery systems come with backup or islanding capability, which allows them to continue powering your home even when the grid goes down.

If backup power matters to you, it's worth asking about this specifically when we come out to quote. Not every battery model offers it, but several of the systems we install do support this feature. It can be particularly useful for keeping essentials like fridges, heating controls, and lighting running during an outage.

What warranty comes with a solar battery?

Battery warranties vary between manufacturers, but most quality systems come with a warranty of around 10 years as standard. Some manufacturers back their products with longer terms, and it's worth checking the degradation warranty as well as the product warranty. A degradation warranty tells you the minimum capacity your battery is guaranteed to hold after a set number of years or charge cycles.

Here's a quick summary of what you can typically expect from a well-specified battery installation:

  • Battery product warranty: typically 10 years from the manufacturer
  • Capacity retention: most quality batteries retain around 70 to 80% capacity after 10 years
  • Inverter warranty: usually 5 to 10 years depending on the model
  • MCS certified installation: required for SEG payments and certain tariff eligibility
  • App monitoring: included with most modern battery systems
  • Modular options: available on selected systems if you want to expand later

What is the Smart Export Guarantee and does a battery affect it?

The Smart Export Guarantee, or SEG, is a government-backed scheme that requires licensed energy suppliers to pay you for electricity you export to the grid. If your solar and battery system is installed by an MCS certified installer, you're eligible to apply for SEG payments through your energy supplier. Glasgow Solar Panel Installers is MCS certified, so any installation we carry out meets the requirements.

Adding a battery doesn't stop you from receiving SEG payments. You'll simply export less, because more of your generated electricity stays in the battery for your own use. The electricity you do export will still earn you a payment per unit. It's a sensible setup, using what you generate and getting paid for anything left over.
